Meet the Librarian

UoNA Librarian

Mr. Omar E. Akchurin


Omar E. Akchurin has over fifteen years of teaching experience at the Bachelorís and Masterís levels. He was the Director of Learning Resources and the Library at Potomac College. Prior to Potomac Omar was the University Librarian for National-Louis Universityís (NLU) Northern Virginia/Washington DC campuses for over ten years. More recently he was Vice President of Client Services for Library Associates Companies (LAC), a major national library services company providing services to libraries, recruitment, consulting services.

At LAC he was responsible for corporate oversight of contracts assuring delivery of services, and quality assurance, focused on managing customer relations, executing contracts, consulting, and technical support. He supervised a team of 100 professional librarians and support staff providing a range of services including, reference, outreach programs, training, cataloging, acquisitions, interlibrary loan, library management, as well as other functions. Some of the contracts he was responsible for were the Library of Congress (5 on-going projects and numerous task orders), Tulane University Library (Katrina recovery), National Library of Medicine (1 major contract), Montgomery College (cataloging and multiple technical services task orders), Georgetown University Library (foreign language cataloging), Discovery Channel.

He has over 25 years of professional library experience covering public, academic, corporate, association, and government libraries. He was responsible for two major Cabinet Level Libraries, manager of the U.S. Department of Labor Wirtz Labor Library and the Library Director of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and a national trade association's information center. Building on his experience in ďpractical automationĒ with small companies in the late 1970ís and 1980ís he continued his involvement in the development of electronic archives and libraries in the 1990ís, the precursors to the current move toward digitalization. 


He is active in the American Society for Information Science and Technology having served as the Chair of the Potomac Valley Chapter (Washington, DC) and also chaired the Information Technology Group of the Washington DC Chapter of the Special Libraries Association.


Omar also held an Adjunct Professor appointment with National-Louis Universityís College of Management and Business where he taught at the Bachelors and Masters level, teaching courses in Management, International Management, and Information Literacy. He also taught an experiential learning course for LUís College of Arts and Sciences and Information Literacy for the NLUís National College of Educationís Masterís degree programs.


Mr. Akchurin also has held corporate leadership positions in international trade companies and served as a Director of the American Association of Exporters and Importers and as Chair of the Associationís Nominating Committee.


He received his BS from Temple University, a professional bachelorís degree (BFT) from Thunderbird, School of Global Management, and a MLS from Long Island University.
